"I would lie completely still beneath the wool blankets and negotiate with my own lungs. Small breath in. Hold. Small breath out. Except the breath out never came easily. My chest held the air hostage, too starved to release what little it had managed to capture, too frightened to let go. Breathing became the most exhausting work I had ever done. Every inhale a small victory. Every exhale a negotiation.
